چکیده

(2848) Epidendrum flabellum-veneris J. Koenig in Retzius, Observ. Bot. 6: 57. Jul–Nov 1791 [Angiosp.: Orchid.], nom. utique rej. prop. Typus: non designatus. The name Bulbophyllum lepidum (Blume) J.J. Sm. (Orch. Java: 471. 1905), based on Ephippium Blume (Bijdr. Fl. Ned. Ind.: 310. 1825), has long been applied to a species widely distributed tropical Southeast Asia, including India (Andaman Islands), Thailand, Myanmar, southern China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Moluccas and the Philippines. (l.c.) described basis of collections from Indonesia. most distinctive diagnostic character separating B. its congeners is enlarged antrorse column wings, with rounded stelidia overtopped by wings (Smith, l.c. 1905; Holttum, Rev. Malaya 1: 415. 1957; Vermeulen & al., Borneo: 95. 2015). morphology makes it easily distinguished. Seidenfaden, his book König's names (Descr. Epidendrorum J.G. König: 39. 1995), noted that an earlier existed he considered applicable species. This was (in 1791) treated as conspecific later lepidum. new combination Cirrhopetalum (J. Koenig) Seidenf. Ormerod (‘flabelloveneris’) published (Seidenfaden, 1995) this transferred genus Aver. (Updated Checkl. Orchids Vietnam: 73. 2003). However, during taxonomic review we discovered identity unclear. We have not located any traceable original material herbaria are known preserve König specimens. Given vagueness description protologue, many sect. would fit description, something also pointed out al. (l.c.: 97), who preferred reject name, but did make formal proposal do so. In fact, Köenig) only occasionally used last 20 years, e.g., Seigerist (Bulbophyllum Allies: 173. 2001, “Cirrhopetalum flabellovernis”), Ong (Wild Penins. Malaysia: 2011), although listed several online nomenclatural databases (e.g., Plant List, http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/record/kew-222223; World Flora Online, http://www.wordfloraonline.org/search?query=Bulbophyllum+flabellum-veneris). contrast, explicitly defined consistently accepted almost all relevant national regional floras, other literature since publication Schlechter Repert. Therefore, accordance Art. 56 ICN (Turland Regnum 159. 2018), formally propose outright rejection flabellum-veneris, first suggested 97). Supernormal Stimulus as a Mimicry Strategy: the case for Epidendrum radicans (Orchidaceae)

Epidendrum radicans is a food deceptive Batesian mimic of its sympatric model species Asclepias curassavica and Lantana camara. Theoretically, food deceptive orchids should be rare with small inflorescences (Johnson et al. 1993; Weins 1978) yet in San Luis, Costa Rica E. radicans grows in large monotypic stands with individuals sporting up to 12 open flowers per inflorescence. E. radicans might...

Interploidy hybridization in sympatric zones: the formation of Epidendrum fulgens × E. puniceoluteum hybrids (Epidendroideae, Orchidaceae)

Interspecific hybridization is a primary cause of extensive morphological and chromosomal variation and plays an important role in plant species diversification. However, the role of interploidal hybridization in the formation of hybrid swarms is less clear. Epidendrum encompasses wide variation in chromosome number and lacks strong premating barriers, making the genus a good model for clarifyi...

Ants visit nectaries of Epidendrum denticulatum (Orchidaceae) in a Brazilian rainforest: effects on herbivory and pollination.

Epidendrum denticulatum (Orchidaceae) produces nectar on the petioles of buds, flowers, and fruits (extrafloral nectaries) but no nectar is found on its flowers, and it is probably a deceptive species. In the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest, some aspects of both the ecology and behavior of Camponotus sericeiventris (Formicinae) and Ectatomma tuberculatum (Ponerinae), two ant species foraging on E...

Outcomes of Extensive Hybridization and Introgression in Epidendrum (Orchidaceae): Can We Rely on Species Boundaries?

Hybridization has the potential to contribute to phenotypic and genetic variation and can be a major evolutionary mechanism. However, when hybridization is extensive it can also lead to the blurring of species boundaries and the emergence of cryptic species (i.e., two or more species not distinguishable morphologically). In this study, we address this hypothesis in Epidendrum, the largest Neotr...
